UNRWA School Closures and Malnutrition

The closures, which began on April 8, 2025, when Israeli education officials forcibly entered six UNRWA schools in East Jerusalem, have left 800 students without access to education, further compounding the challenges faced by families already struggling with food insecurity.

Rising Malnutrition Rates

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), a rising number of children in Gaza are receiving treatment for malnutrition. This alarming trend is fueled by the ongoing blockade on aid supplies, which aid organizations warn is pushing the humanitarian aid system in Gaza towards “total collapse.” Twelve charities are urging Israel to allow them to deliver aid, describing the situation as one of the “worst humanitarian failures of our generation.”

Escalating Violence and Casualties

The situation is further complicated by continued Israeli military actions. In the past two days (April 17-19, 2025), Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of 92 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, with at least 219 people injured since Good Friday, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Airstrikes have also targeted hospitals, with a recent strike on a field hospital killing a medic and wounding ten others.

Hamas’ Proposal and Continued Conflict

Hamas’ Gaza chief has offered to release all remaining hostages in exchange for an end to the war, the release of Palestinian prisoners, and the reconstruction of Gaza. However, the conflict continues, and the closure of UNRWA schools adds another layer of hardship for Gaza’s children, threatening their future and well-being as casualties increase.
