The United Nations has issued stark warnings of potential “annihilation” in Gaza as Israeli strikes intensify and a severe aid blockade continues to cripple the region. The renewed offensive follows the end of a previous ceasefire, trapping the population in a cycle of misery, hunger, and disease.
Rising Casualties and Targeted Attacks
Recent Israeli attacks have resulted in a surge of deaths and injuries. On May 10, 2025, at least 13 people, including three children, were killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, in the past 24 hours alone, at least 23 Palestinians have been killed and 124 others injured in Israeli attacks across the region.
Specific incidents include the bombing of a tent in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, which killed five members of the Tlaib family. A drone attack in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood resulted in six deaths, and another person died in the Sheikh Radwan area after an Israeli bombing of an apartment.
Israeli forces have also targeted shelters, with strikes on a school housing displaced people in the Bureij refugee camp leading to 31 deaths and dozens of injuries.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
A months-long Israeli blockade has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, preventing essential supplies from entering Gaza. Cancer and diabetes patients are suffering due to the ban on the entry of medicine and other critical items.
The UN reports that over 52,535 deaths, 70% of whom are women and children, and 118,491 injuries have been recorded as of May 4, 2025.
International Condemnation
Amnesty International stated on May 7, 2025, that the Israeli government must immediately abandon its plans for expanded military operations, including annexing territory and forcibly displacing Palestinians in Gaza. The organization has condemned the ongoing attacks and called for international intervention to protect civilians.
The UN’s warnings and Amnesty International’s statements highlight the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities and the provision of humanitarian aid to prevent further suffering and potential annihilation in Gaza.
