A critical shortage of medical personnel is crippling Gaza’s healthcare system, with recent hospital strikes exacerbating an already dire situation. As the conflict escalates, the few remaining medical professionals are struggling to provide care for a population in desperate need.
Hospital Strikes Devastate Medical Infrastructure
An Israeli airstrike on the Kuwaiti Field Hospital in Muwasi resulted in the death of a medic and injuries to ten others. This attack follows closely on the heels of another strike that rendered the last major hospital providing critical care “out of service”, according to the UN. Israel claims it targeted a Hamas command and control center within the facility, a claim vehemently denied by Hamas.
Healthcare System on the Brink
The impact of these strikes, combined with a severe blockade, has pushed Gaza’s healthcare system to the brink of collapse. Approximately 95% of aid groups have suspended or cut their services due to the ongoing bombardment, leaving civilians with extremely limited access to medical assistance. The Gaza Ministry of Health reports over 51,000 fatalities, with women and children comprising more than half of the casualties. With approximately 90% of Gaza’s population displaced, access to even basic medical care has become nearly impossible for many.
Renewed Hostilities Reverse Progress
The renewed hostilities, which began in March after a brief ceasefire, have reversed any progress made towards recovery. The international community is being urged to intervene to protect medical facilities and personnel, and to ensure the delivery of life-saving aid to Gaza’s desperate population.
