The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen as Israeli forces intensify attacks, resulting in a rising death toll and further devastation of civilian infrastructure. Recent reports indicate a severe tightening of the aid blockade, exacerbating the already dire conditions for the war-weary population. As of April 24, 2025, the Gaza Government Media Office has updated the death toll to over 61,700, a figure that includes those still missing under the rubble.
Recent Strikes and Casualties
Al Jazeera reported that on April 24 alone, at least 45 people were killed and over 100 injured in recent strikes, some of which targeted civilian shelters in Gaza City. Medical sources have confirmed the rising death tolls from overnight and pre-dawn strikes, painting a grim picture of the relentless bombardment.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) has warned that the Gaza Strip is facing its worst humanitarian crisis since October 2023. The crisis is fueled by stalled aid operations resulting from expanding military operations, blockades, attacks on aid workers, and severe movement restrictions. The Gaza Ministry of Health reports that the region is experiencing stage five malnutrition, the most severe stage, according to the World Health Organization.
Aid Blockade and Supply Shortages
Adding to the crisis, it has been more than seven weeks since Israel reimposed a total blockade on Gaza, preventing the entry of essential supplies such as food, fuel, and water. Charity kitchens, which serve as a remaining lifeline for many Palestinians, are reportedly days away from shutting down. Approximately 95% of aid groups have been forced to suspend or significantly reduce their services due to the ongoing hostilities and restrictions.
Escalating Violence
On April 22, Israeli forces killed at least 32 Palestinians in attacks across the Gaza Strip, with 11 people reportedly burned to death in Khan Younis. Raids have also increased in the occupied West Bank, leading to the detention of more than two dozen Palestinians. In al-Mawasi, southern Gaza, at least one person was killed by Israeli live fire, and a tent for displaced people was bombed.
International Response
The international community has yet to release any comments on the worsening crisis. The situation remains critical as civilians bear the brunt of continued military actions and a severe humanitarian blockade.
