The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached a critical point, with starvation claiming the lives of dozens, primarily children and the elderly. According to the Palestinian Authority Health Minister, Majed Abu Ramadan, at least 29 individuals have died in recent days due to starvation-related causes. The United Nations and other humanitarian organizations are sounding the alarm about acute hunger affecting the 2.1 million residents of Gaza.

This dire situation unfolds amidst a backdrop of limited aid deliveries and ongoing conflict. While over 90 lorry loads of humanitarian aid, including essential supplies like flour, baby food, and medical equipment, have entered Gaza after Israel eased an 11-week blockade, the UN emphasizes that this is “nowhere near enough.” The pre-war average was around 500 lorries daily, highlighting the massive shortfall in supplies.

“Half a million people are at risk of starvation in the coming months, according to a UN assessment.”

Adding to the complexity, Palestinians in southern Gaza have been protesting against Hamas for three consecutive days, demanding an end to the war and the group’s removal from Gaza. These demonstrations reflect growing frustration with the ongoing conflict and its devastating impact on the civilian population.

Despite the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, Israeli military actions continue across Gaza. Recent reports indicate that at least 51 Palestinians were killed on May 22nd, with Al Jazeera reporting at least 85 deaths since the early hours of the same day. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that at least 53,762 Palestinians have been killed and more than 121,000 injured since the start of the war in October 2023.

The aid gridlock, combined with continued violence and internal protests, paints a grim picture of Gaza’s current state. The international community is facing increasing pressure to address the humanitarian crisis and find a sustainable solution to alleviate the suffering of the Gazan people. Meanwhile, tensions remain high in the West Bank, with reports of raids and clashes in various locations, further exacerbating the already volatile situation.
